Imphal, February 21 2024:
The Naga People's Front (NPF) will contest in the Lok Sabha elections likely to be held in April or May this year, said a reliable source in the party.
The party will field one candidate in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
Notably, Dr Lorho S Pfoze, elected from Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, is the current MP representing the NPF.
Four persons, including MP Dr Lorho S Pfoze are in the fray for the party ticket, said the source.
The other three intending candidates are former president of United Naga Council (UNC) Kho John, former MLA Samuel Risom and retired Income Tax Commissioner K Timothy Zimik.
MP Dr Lorho S Pfoze hails from Mao Gate, Senapati district, Kho John is from Senapati district's Tungjoy.
Former MLA Samuel Risom is from Ukhrul's Hundung.
Retired IRS K Timothy Zimik is from Ukhrul.
Even though preparations for the election have been taken up, no election committees have been formed yet, said the source.
Another reliable source said the intending candidates have begun campaigning in six Constituencies of Thoubal and Kakching district which are included in the Outer Parliamentary Constituency.
The six Constituencies in Thoubal and Kakching districts which fall under the larger Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency are Wangjing-Tentha, Heirok, Wabagai, Kakching, Sugnu and Hiyanglam.
Jiribam district is also included in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
While people of these seven Constituencies including Jiribam have the right to vote in the Outer Parliamentary election, they have not been given the right to contest in the elections.
On the other hand, these Constituencies in the valley usually decide the outcome of the election.
Meanwhile, there is a speculation that the Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) may also field a candidate for the Outer Parliamentary Constituency election, likely to be held in late April or early May.
