Imphal, February 05 2015:
MEELAL has once again given a week's time to vehicle owners for inscribing the registration numbers in Meitei script following a request from various transporters' associations.
Today morning, MEELAL seized RC books of over 100 vehicles, which had no registration number in Meitei script as the civil society organisation re-launched their drive.
However, the civil society organisation suspended the drive after representatives of various transporters' associations requested them to give a week's time.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club later, MEELAL president Sadokpam Tomba Mangang said that they have been requesting the general public to include Meitei script in printing sign boards, banners and hoardings etc since a long time back.
After having rounds of talks with MEELAL representatives, the State Transport Department agreed to inscribe registration numbers in Meitei script without disturbing the existing high security number plates, he added.
After this agreement, MEELAL had repeatedly requested the general public to include Meitei script while inscribing registration number of their vehicles, Tomba said.
He further said that RC books of over 100 vehicles, mainly passenger vehicles, were seized during today's drive.
However, they decided later to suspend the drive as the transporters' bodies requested them to give a week's time for the said purpose.
However, the seized RC books would be returned only after these vehicles inscribe registration numbers in Meitei script.
Tomba added that the restriction would be relaxed for the vehicles belonging to people from hill districts for some more time.
Regarding the Government and security vehicles, Tomba said that MEELAL would request the authority concerned to do the needful so that registration numbers of these vehicles are also inscribed in Meitei script.
