Imphal, February 05 2015:
Expressing deep shock at the severe atrocities perpetrated on civilians by the personnel of the 24th AR posted at Tengnoupal along National Highway 102 instead of ensuring their protection, the president of the Apunba Manipur Kanba Ema Lup Ph Sakhi has announced that seven major organisations will be extending full cooperation to the ongoing agitations taken up by the Tengnoupal villagers if the paramilitary is not relocated.
Sakhi was speaking to mediapersons at a press meet held at the office of the All Manipur Students' Union this afternoon.
The meet was jointly hosted by the seven organisations namely All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Organisation, All Manipur Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation, United People's Front, Eriepak Enat Chanura Loinasinlon, AMSU and AMKEL.
She stated that the act of forcing a pregnant woman who was on the verge of delivering her baby to walk for around a kilometer is very distressing and regretted that the very persons who had been sent to safeguard the civilians by the Indian government are putting them under fear.
Mentioning that another individual in urgent need of medical attention after suffering a BP stroke was meted the same treatment as the pregnant woman, Sakhi informed that if the Assam Rifles post is not shifted immediately the seven organisations will wholeheartedly support the agitations launched by the people of Tegnoupal.
Though there was an apparent agreement between the government and the JAC, it appeared that the bandh supporters do not share the same opinion with the JAC leaders.
This implies that the villagers have no willingness to ease their stance.
We believed that the demands of the people of Tegnoupal have not been taken back, so we will strive with them until the demands are achieved, she states.
Secretary of Human Resources and Development of AMSU, S Manjit denounced the Assam Rifles for creating hindrances and difficulties for the civilians and drew an inference from the Tegnoupal incident that the paramilitary are functioning above the state administration.
He announced that the students' organisation will work in tandem with civil society organisations to add more vigor to the ongoing agitations.
