AR asked not to detain travellers

Law and order situation of the State including the ongoing indefinite NH-102 bandh demanding withdrawal of 24 Assam Rifles from Tengnoupal were deliberated at length at the Combined Headquarters meeting held at the Chief Minister's office this evening.
Presided by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, the meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, DGP Shahid Ahmad, Principal Secretary (Home) Dr Suresh Babu and high ranking officers of Assam Rifles, Army, CRPF, BSF and other security agencies.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gaikhangam, who also holds the Home portfolio said that taking serious note of the incidents occurring on NH-102, the State Government has asked the security agencies to put in best effort not to create inconveniences to travellers.
Maintaining that the State Government is not authorised to stop frisking of vehicles at Tengnoupal, Gaikhangam said that they have however requested the security agencies to open the highway for 24 hours.
Informing that the State Government has also asked the security agencies not to detain travellers for long hours in the name of frisking, Gaikhangam expressed hope that some positive changes would emerge in this
regard soon.
Although, the security agencies have been directed to reduce the number of check posts on the highway as demanded by the JAC, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the State Government is not authorised to change the Commandant of 24 Assam Rifles.
Saying that Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has met the JAC representatives, he said that the ongoing bandh is likely to be lifted soon.
He added that the State Government has requested the Union Home Ministry to install a vehicle scanner machine worth Rs 40 crore on NH-102 .
Apart from reviewing the present law and order situation, the meeting also discussed the security of rail construction works in Tamenglong.
