Imphal, February 04 2015:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned and seriously questioned the alleged irresponsible and immature behaviour of 24 Assam Rifles for caging the villagers of Tengnoupal Block from 6 pm to 5 am and also making the commuters plying along Imphal-Moreh road wait for several hours to get their vehicles and belongings checked in the name of security reasons or otherwise.
A statement issued by the UNC today said that every right thinking citizen should also condemn the same and there is no room for martial law in any democratic country.
The UNC views the alleged inhumane treatment of passengers by Assam Rifles as deliberate attempts to torture and harass the innocent civilians.
People of North East and particularly the Nagas have faced enough of cruelties post Indian Independence, it said.
"Equipped with Internationally condemned draconian law, AFSPA 1958 and to suppress the 'Naga National Movement for Independence', the Assam Rifles in violation of human rights, had destroyed and burnt down uncountable Naga villages, destroyed properties, crops and many civilians were killed, buried alive, tortured and harassed and many were maimed, imprisoned and went missing and also, many more women were dishonoured in front of their husbands and relatives," the UNC said.
