Imphal, July 30 2024:
Following heavy rainfall last night, a section of Old Cachar Road, also known as Tongjei Maril has sunk between Rengpang and Taodaijang while many loaded trucks and oil tankers are stuck in a thick layer of mud in the middle of Imphal-Jiribam highway near Nungba.
Moreover, landslides have been reported from different sections of Khongshang-Tamenglong road.
A 50-metre long section of Old Cachar Road sank between Rengpang and Taodaijang last night.
As a result, the road connecting Imphal-Jiribam highway (Rengpang) to Khoupum Valley has been cut off.
Notably, Old Cachar Road is under the care of the State PWD.
PWD Chief Engineer N Subhash maintained that the road connecting Bishnupur to Khoupum valley is unaffected.
However, there is no alternative road other than Old Cachar Road for travelling to Khoupum Valley from Rengpang, he said.
A team of PWD engineers went to the spot and inspected the sunken section today.
A team of contractors has also inspected the same sunken section.
The department is considering cutting the hill slope 100 metres away from the sunken section to build a new road, the Chief Engineer said.
Necessary machinery will be sent in within the next couple of days to start cutting the hill slope for making road, he said.
Meanwhile, landslides have been reported from different places along Khongshang-Tamenglong Road.
Landslide was also reported from near Sinam village along Imphal-Jiribam highway.
Moreover, wheels of many loaded trucks and tankers have been stuck in mud on the same highway.
Notably, POL and LPG transporters suspended movement of their tankers on Imphal-Jiribam highway for three days recently to give time to the NHIDCL to repair the most deplorable sections of the highway.
