Assam Rifles celebrates 189th Raising Day

Assam Rifles, the oldest and most decorated para military force of the country, celebrated its 189th Raising Day on Sunday.
Raised in 1835, the force has done yeoman service to the nation and contributed immensely in bringing peace in the North East states, informed a release issued by PRO IGAR (S) .
Lt Gen P C Nair, DG Assam Rifles, and all ranks of the force paid homage at the War Memorial in Shillong to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice.
During his address, the DG commended all ranks of the force for then-outstanding contribution in fighting insurgency in the North East and Kashmir.
The Assam Rifles has continued to prove its mettle in operations in 2023-24 .
During the past year, three battalions of Assam Rifles received Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation and five battalions received General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation.
In addition, personnel of the force were awarded with two Shaurya Chakra, eight Sena medals, 412 presidential and governor's medals, according to the release.
The force has also excelled in sports by winning 163 medals at national level and 22 medals at international level in various sports events in the year 2023-24.Assam Rifles remains committed to modernise its equipment profile in terms of acquisition of state of art, weapons, surveillance and protective equipment.
It has created a first amongst Central Armed Police Forces Cyber Security Operation Centre to safeguard its networks from cyber intrusions and has signed a memorandum of understanding with universities to upskill its manpower and accredit the academic and training programme of Assam Rifles, the release continued.
It added, "With every passing year, the Assam Rifles continues to stand strong amongst the people of the North East.
As the region moves towards development and prosperity, the force continues to instil a sense of security amongst the locals.
The Assam Rifles continues to evolve to meet new challenges and live up to its motto and its role as the 'Sentinels of the North East' .
