Imphal, March 24 2024:
Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, Manipur president Soraisham Memcha suggested that political parties strive to end the ongoing violence in Manipur rather than prioritising election.
Addressing media persons at the Meira Paibi group's office on Sunday, Memcha expressed strong resentment that political parties.
are taking keen interest in holding election even the people continue to be affected by the ethnic violence and suffering for over 10 months.
Reminding all concerned said that the violence that broke out on May 3, 2023 is yet to end with neither any sign of resolving the crisis from the side of the Centre, she accused Union home minister Amit Shah of betraying the people of Manipur for undermining public safety and sentiment contrary to the assurance given to resolve the violence during his visit to the state during the peak of the violence.
What is even more appalling for the people of Manipur is the stoic silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the humanitarian crisis though he had visited neighbouring Assam state twice, Memcha said.
According to the secretary, the ongoing violence has claimed the lives of over 200 people and rendered more than 50,000 people homeless.
Almost every sector including education of children has been affected by the violence regardless of which the only concern for the political parties seem to be in holding election, Memcha said while suggesting as the present situation is not conducive for election political parties should rather put efforts in resolving the crisis.
