One must take pride of one's cultural background, the CM said.
There are 30 different tribes in the State each with a different set of cultural values and beliefs.
The CM rubbished the distinction as Hill and Valley people.
He said despite geographical differences the people of Manipur are Manipuris.
The CM acknowledged the endeavour of the Tribal Research Institute to protect tribal cultures.
This year's Sangai Festival, the annual festival of the hills and valley, will showcase the lifestlye of different communities to the visiting tourists through the replicas of traditional houses set up at the festival venue.
The CM further urged the different communities to maintain peace in the State.
The Sangai Festival is one such festival that encompasses all the varied cultures in the State.
Imposing a ban on such a festival is a disappointment, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam stated.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Tonsing, MLA Yamthang Haokip and other officials also attended the opening event.
Cutural programmes and a tribal fair were the highlights of the event.
