CJ, Judges interact with IDPs

High Court of Manipur Chief Justice K Somashekhar, Judges A Bimol Singh and A Guneshwar Sharma today visited Pravabati College relief camp, Mayang Imphal and interacted with the IDPs staying there.
The Chief Justice and the Judges distributed essential relief items including jumbo boxes, double folding mosquito nets, torch lights with lamps, radio, diapers, buckets, mugs, infant milk, sanitary pads, soap, detergent, as well as sports and recreational items such as footballs, volleyballs, badminton, skipping ropes and toys for children.
A free medical camp was also organized for the relief camp residents.
During the interaction programme, Chief Justice K Somashekar highlighted the vital role of legal services institutions in ensuring access to justice for all, particularly the vulnerable and marginalized sections of society.
He emphasized that legal services authorities are here not only to provide legal assistance but also to serve as instruments of upliftment, empowerment, and social justice.
In his remarks, the Chief Justice reaffirmed the judiciary's unwavering commitment to the principles of equality and justice enshrined in the Article 14 of the Constitution of India, conveyed a press release issued by Manipur State Legal Services Authority Deputy member secretary S Mangaleibi Devi.
While addressing the media persons, Justice A Bimol Singh, Executive Chairman, MASLSA stated that members of the judicial fraternity in Manipur have been personally contributing relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) since 2023.As a part of this humanitarian effort, Justice BR Gavai, along with companion Judges of the Supreme Court of India, visited Manipur on 22nd March 2025 and inaugurated a mega health camp providing free medical services across all relief camps.
This initiative is now being expanded to cover all relief camps in the State with the assistance from National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), New Delhi.
As a part of an awareness programme, Alek Muivah, Member Secretary, MASLSA highlighted the availability of free legal aid under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and the categories of eligible persons to receive legal assistance at free of cost.
He also informed the gathering about the provisions for victim compensation implemented through the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) and MASLSA, aimed at providing financial relief and support to victims of crime.
The visit was attended by several dignitaries and officials, including Ojesh Mutum, Registrar General, High Court of Manipur; Alek Muivah, Member Secretary, MASLSA; Y Rother, District & Sessions Judge, Imphal West & Chairman DLSA Imphal West and A Tarunakumari Devi, Secretary, DLSA Imphal.
From the district administration, SDO/SDC, Mayang Imphal, medical Officers and other officials participated.
