Deadline for arms surrender extended

Imphal, February 28 2025:
The deadline for surrendering looted or illegally held weapons and ammunition has been extended up to 4 pm of March 6, 2025 .
Notably, Governor Ajay Kumar issued a public appeal on February 20 asking all the people, particularly youth in the valley and hills, to voluntarily come forward and surrender looted and illegally held weapons and ammunition to the nearest police station/outpost/security forces camp within seven days.
The seven days deadline expired on Thursday.
Upon expiry of the deadline, the Governor has decided to extend the deadline till March 6, 2025 .
During this period no punitive action will be taken against the individuals who voluntarily surrender weapons.
However, any person found in possession of illegal or looted arms after the given deadline will face legal action as per law, said a press release issued by the Governor.
The police and security forces would be taking up extensive operations after the said deadline, it said.
Saying that this is the last opportunity for everyone concerned to contribute to peace, communal harmony, safeguarding the future of youths and security of the society, the Governor has appealed to all those still in possession of looted and illegal weapons and ammunition to surrender the same without any fear of prosecution within the given period.
A huge number of arms have been surrendered across the State in the first phase of the clemency period.
