20 pc of population facing mental distress: MCPCR

While 10 out of every 100 Indians are suffering from mental illness, the estimate of people in Manipur suffering from some sort of mental affliction stands at 20 out of every 100, stated Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) chairperson Keisham Pradipkumar.
Speaking at a one-day state level discussion programme held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Tuesday on how to deal with mental stress and health of around 2000 children staying in 55 Child Care Institutes (CCIs) in the state under the Juvenile Justice Act, Pradipkumar continued that after experiencing Covid-19 pandemic, people of Manipur are now facing an unprecedented ethnic conflict for over 16 months.
While every eight people suffer from some sort of mental distress, children staying at CCIs need additional support, he stressed while pointing out that as no child is similar, there is need to provide customised treatment and counselling pattern.
The chairperson suggested formulating Individual Care Planning to facilitate proper and effective counselling, and help calm and restore the spirit ahd mental health of the children.
