Street vendors demand right to livelihood

Imphal, August 21 2025:
A meeting of street vendors was jointly organised for the second time this month by Street Vendors' Union (SVU) and Road Side Vendors' Welfare Association (RSVWA) at Rupmahal Theatre on Thursday.
The meeting held under the theme 'Stop eviction of vendors' was attended by Alu Galli Street Vendors' Union convener Kh Roma, Moirangthem Tombi, Kh Nganbi, W Amubi, Apik and RSVWA president Kshetri Tama as presidium members.
The meeting strongly condemned harassment of street vendors by Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and security personnel including arbitrary seizure and damage caused to their wares, imposition of heavy penalties and summoning them to IMC office.
Speaking at the meet, RSVWA president Tama demanded that the government frame a long term street vendor policy after consulting stakeholders concerned.
The attendees also chanted slogans demanding right to livelihood, etc.
The meeting resolved to press the government to stop eviction of street vendors and allow them to freely sell their wares.
