Imphal, August 07 2025:
In commemoration of the National Handloom Day 2025, Indian Army organised a cultural and educational visit for 25 students of L Dhananjay Memorial English School to the Yarn Bank located at Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district.
According to PRO (Defence), the Yarn Bank established under Operation Sadbhavna functions as a small-scale weaving unit empowering local women by reviving traditional handloom skills and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
The trip was aimed at raising awareness among students about India's rich textile legacy while spotlighting the significant role of Manipuri women in preserving indigenous crafts.
The students were welcomed by the School principal Kuman Oken and participated in an interactive session on the historical relevance of National Handloom Day, followed by a short documentary depicting the journey from raw yarn to finished handloom products.
During a guided tour of the facility, students observed intricate weaving techniques and traditional tools used in the handloom process.
A highlight of the visit was the introduction to 'Lengyan' - a signature handloom label produced at the Yarn Bank that celebrates local craftsmanship arid reflects the spirit of self-reliant rural enterprise.
The products under this label are in high demand across the country, and 'Lengyan' was recently presented to the Governor during the Durand Cup trophy exhibition, further showcasing its cultural and commercial value, the PRO conveyed.
Informing that the programme concluded with a Warm tea session fostering dialogue between students, teachers, and local weavers, the PRO added that the outreach exemplifies the Indian Army's continued commitment to women's empowerment, cultural preservation, and strengthening civil-military relations through inclusive community engagement.
