ATSUM drops planned stir

Imphal, August 31 2017: All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) will not go ahead with its planned agitation following an assurance from the Manipur University authority today .

Earlier, ATSUM had served a 48 hour ultimatum to the Manipur University authority demanding that it follows the High Court directives and the Central Educational Institution Reservation Act, 2012 with regard to the admission process .

The apex tribal students’ body had also warned earlier of resorting to severe forms of agitation if the Manipur University authority does not oblige to its demand.

The ultimatum lapsed on August 30 but the tribal student body extended the deadline by another 24 hours yesterday which lapsed today .

In the meeting between the Manipur University authority and the students' body today the former assured the latter to "fulfil demands," according to ATSUM .

Speaking to media persons at its office here today, ATSUM information and publicity secretary Micah Kamei however said that if the assurance is not translated into action "we will resort to different forms of agitation."
The latest decision of the ATSUM executives came following the meeting between the tribal student leaders and the varsity authority.

Micah Kamei said, they met Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Adya Prasad Pandey at his official chamber today .

The Vice Chancellor promised to fulfil the tribal students' demands and also to strictly follow the High Court directives and Central Educational Institution Reservation Act, 2012 rules in next session, according to Micah Kamei .

Governor meeting: ATSUM met Manipur Governor Najma A Heptulla at Raj Bhawan today where the latter gave a "positive response" to the tribal student leaders, claimed ATSUM leader Micah Kamei.

She also assured to forward the memorandum to the Ministry of Human Resource Development and other competent authorities, Micah said .

ATSUM also submitted a memorandum to the Governor requesting her to intervene into the reservation imbroglio of Manipur University pertaining to admission of students.
