Imphal, April 30 2025:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has accused 21 MLAs of going "against" the Constitution and "misleading" the people by approaching the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister for forming a popular Government in the State.
The Prime Minister or the Union Home Minister wield no power to form Government under the Constitution.
The MLAs should have approached the Governor of the State if they really wanted to form the Government, said Advocate S Shyamacharan, chairman of MPCC's Legal Department.
Speaking to reporters at Congress Bhavan today, Shyamacharan said the MLAs writing to the Prime Minister urging him to form Government was very unfortunate, and it misled the people.
While it was against the Constitution, the action of the MLAs has shown the people of the State in poor light to the outside world, he said.
Shyamacharan said "It was an attempt to wrongly show that the people of the State have poor understanding of the Constitution".
Notably, 21 MLAs of BJP, NPP, NPF and Independents had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday to install a popular Government in Manipur.
Manipur is currently under President's Rule since February 13, 2025, following N Biren Singh's resignation as the Chief Minister on February 9, 2025 .
Shyamacharan alleged that the action of writing a letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister is "another drama" of the BJP after then Chief Minister N Biren Singh's "drama" .
"It was an attempt to save themselves when people started asking questions.
It is a sham to show that they are trying.
In reality, the Prime Minister or the Union Home Minister wields no power to form any Government," Shyamacharan said.
He further launched a scathing attack on the NPP MLAs, accusing them of being "opportunists" .
Despite the NPP State president's declaration to withdraw support to the BJP in the State, the stand of the MLAs are not clear.
They seem to be supporting the BJP when they are about to get some opportunities.
Their stand isn't clear, Shyamacharan said.
MPCC's Advocate Brojen was also present in the press meet.
