Imphal, March 01 2024:
Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) Manipur has welcomed the recent decision of the Assam government to elevate Manipuri language as associate official language in four districts of the neighbouring state.
In a statement, FOCS said that the February 23 decision of the Assam Cabinet to accord associate official language status to Manipuri language in Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj and Hojai districts was indeed a welcoming step from the Assam government for the Manipuri people of Assam in particular and the whole Manipuri community in general.
The decision also underscores Assam government's commitment towards maintaining the cordial relationship between the two states that existed long before Indian gained independence.
This is a happy moment for the Meeteis and Meitei Pangal, who have settled in Assam since the seven years devastation of Manipur in 1819-1826.It is also the outcome of the relentless efforts of different organisations and leaders, FOCS said while expressing gratitude to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Raj, Silchar MP, public leaders and individuals for their support in this regard.
