Thoubal, November 18 2021:
Drawing the attention of the government, Apunba Auto Driver Owners' Association, Thoubal, which is an apex body of 27 organisations, has urged for stopping harassment of auto drivers by Traffic police and 'MBI' over payment of tax.
Speaking to media persons at Thoubal Bazar auto parking, Association's general secretary Ningthoujam Jibon reminded all concerned that the auto drivers, who are practically in the service of the people, were affected by the lockdown and other preventive measures taken up by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
The drivers were elated with the relaxation of restrictive measures and the deduction in fuel prices, he maintained, while adding that the harassment by traffic police and MBI every now and then, stopping and checking autos for clearing the tax should be stopped.
Pointing out that a driver needs to spend around Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 for parking, passenger and toll taxes, Jibon said that auto drivers are unable to pay the taxes at the present situation.
He urged chief minister, transport minister and director to look into the matter and address problems besieging the public transporter operators.
He cautioned that all the consequences should be borne by those who are indulging in the drive if harassment against auto drivers continues.
