Imphal, July 30 2024:
Extrajudicial Execution Victim Families' Association, Manipur (EEVFAM) and Human Rights Alert (HRA) welcomed recommendation of the UN Human Rights Committee to the government of India (GoI) for abolishing the mandatory prior authorisation of the government for prosecution of members of security and armed forces.
A release issued jointly by EEVFAM secretary Edina Yaikhom and HRA executive director Babloo Loitongbam pointed out that the recommendation is significant as denial of prosecution sanction is obstructing trials of the armed forces personnel against whom CBI has found prosecutable evidence in their investigations under the WP(Cr) 129 of 2012 (EEVFAM v/s UoI) .
Informing that the Committee conducted the 4th periodic review of India under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights oh July 15 and 16, 2024 in Geneva, the release reminded that after a six hours long review, wherein the Manipur issue figured at least 13 times, the concluding observation and recommendation of Committee was finally published as UN document on July 25 .
In the light of the recommendation from the UN body, EEVFAM and HRA expressed hope that central government would uphold the same at the earliest for the end of justice.
