MU NSS Cell observes 124th birth anniv of Dr BR Ambedkar

National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Manipur University, Canchipur, observed the 124th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and Poshan Pakhwada, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University on Saturday morning.
Organised under the supervision of MU VC Prof N Lokendra Singh, the observance was attended by dean of Students' Welfare Prof Ch Ibohal Singh as chief guest, Department of Law head Dr Y Premananda Singh and Department of Statistics head Prof S Opendra Singh as guests of honour, and NSS Cell programme coordinator Dr Laishram Santosh Singh as president.

The programme commenced with the NSS song, followed by a solemn floral tribute to the portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar.
In his welcome address, NSS Unit IV programme officer Dr Dalip extended heart felt greetings to all dignitaries, NSS programme officers, and volunteers.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Ch Ibohal Singh reflected on the historical and social impact of Dr Ambedkar's contributions, stressing the need to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution and described the event as a tribute to the legacy of Dr BR Ambedkar, often revered as the "Father of the Indian Constitution" .
In his speech, NSS Cell programme coordinator Dr Laishram Santosh noted that although D.Ambedkar's birth anniversary is traditionally observed on April 14, the university held the event earlier, on April 12, to respect the celebration of Cheiraoba a significant indigenous festival in Manipur.
Drawing inspiration from Dr Ambedkar's commitment to social reform, he urged NSS volunteers to take an active role in campus beautification and waste management, calling it a "core responsibility and a true expression of dedication to the spirit of NSS" .
Dr Y Premananda Singh, in his address, underscored the enduring relevance of Dr BR Ambedkar's vision and the foundational importance of the Indian Constitution.
He emphasised that the Constitution is not only the supreme law of the land but also the cornerstone of India's democratic framework.
It defines governance, safeguards citizens' rights, and ensures justice, equality, and liberty for all, while upholding the spirit of democracy and social harmony.
Prof S Opendra Singh highlighted the meaningful connection between the observance and NSS.
He remarked that NSS is a powerful platform for developing students' personalities and instilling values of leadership, empathy, and responsibility through dedicated community service.
The formal function concluded with a vote of thanks by NSS programme officer Dr Kh Herachandra Singh and closing remarks by NSS Unit III programme officer Dr H Suraj Singh.
The NSS Cell also organised a series of activities, including a poster campaign, cleanliness drive and an ex-tempore speech competition on the theme "Healthy Lifestyle to Address Obesity in Children", in connection with the Poshan initiative.
Meanwhile, a Padayatra was organised on Saturday in connection with the birth anniv of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Jayanti.
According to a press release by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) Manipur state director L Marjitkumar Singh, NYKS in coordination with NSS, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guides is organising Padayatra in all state capitals between April 12 and 14 .
Youths from NYKS, NSS students from colleges, schools, my Bharat Volunteers and other individuals would be taking part in the Padayatra and pledge-taking of Preamble of India.
Meanwhile, the Padayatrh in Imphal was flagged off by ADC Imphal West K Jadumani Singh from the Western Gate of Kangla at around 8.30 am Saturday towards Nityapat Chuthek.
The yatra, which was participated by around 300 youths, culminated near BT Park, the release informed.
