Imphal, April 01 2025:
Kanglei Living Arts (Kangla) Theatre, Uchiwa, celebrated its 20th foundation day at the open air theatre of Island Resort, Thanga Salam, in Bishnupur district on Tuesday.
The event was attended by retired IAS officer Kangjam Radhakumar, theatre personality and Sahitya Akademi awardee Soibam Indrakumar, and Kangla Theatre chairman RK Rajendro as dignitaries on the dais.
Speaking on the occasion, Soibam Indrakumar delved into the changing trends of Manipuri Proscenium Theatre, pointing out that the movement, which was once thriving, is now facing numerous challenges.
He highlighted the growing gap between theatre artistes and audiences, posing a critical question on whether artistes should adapt their craft to meet public expectations or remain true to their traditional form.
He cautioned that this dilemma should not be taken lightly, as the number of theatre groups is dwindling, with many pioneering groups appearing to be in a state of stagnation.
Indrakumar noted the importance of set design and theatre play in modern theatre trends, emphasising the need for more artistic directors and specialists in these areas.
Calling for an adaptation to contemporary trends and public sentiment to keep the theatre scene alive, he warned that focusing solely on personal artistic interpretation and experiments while ignoring the changing scenario could lead to a decline in theatre.
At the same time, he underlined the necessity of raising awareness among audiences about the evolving theatre landscape.
