2 years of crisis observed in Shillong

Shillong, May 03 2025:
Marking two years since the outbreak of violence, the Manipuri community in Shillong held solemn observances on Saturday through academic discourse and emotional remembrance.
The Manipuri Elders' Consortium Shillong (MECS) organised a conference at the youth hostel on the theme "Illegal Immigrants and Narco-Terrorism".
Speakers included Dr Munish Ningthoujam, Prof Stremlet Dkhar, and Dr Aribam Uttam Sharma.
Dr Munish spoke on the territorial integrity of Manipur, emphasising the cultural ties between the Meetei people and the surrounding hill communities.
Prof Stremlet Dkhar addressed the broader issue of illegal immigration in Northeast India, while Dr Uttam highlighted the importance of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in preserving Meetei identity.
The conference also showcased visual presentations on illicit poppy cultivation in Manipur and neighbouring Myanmar, along with state-led efforts to eradicate the practice, protect forest lands, and detect illegal immigrants during 2022 and 2023.In a separate event, the NEHU Manipuri Students' Union (NEMSU) held a candlelight memorial in front of the university's central library.
Led by president Wahengbam Nganthoiba Luwang, students observed a minute of silence in honour of those who died defending the integrity of the state.
