Awareness programme on PPV&FR Act organised

A day-long workshop cum awareness programme on Plant Protection Varieties Farmers' Rights Act (PPV&FR Act) was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Imphal East at its Andro Leitanpekpham complex, on March 29 .
The function was attended by CAU, Imphal Directorate of Extension Education director professor Ph Ranjit Sharma as chief guest while AMAPCON Manipur president P Devkanta Singh, Imphal East District agriculture officer Ph Premila Devi, and ICAR Manipur centre former principal scientist Dr I Meghachandra Singh were the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, professor Ph Ranjit Sharma highlighted that the Plant Protection Varieties and Farmers' Rights (PPV&FR) Act was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 9, 2001 and has been in effect across the country since then.
He informed that the Act falls under Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and allows for the registration and protection of indigenous plant varieties.
"Any plant varieties registered and patented under the Act cannot be claimed by others," he said.
Reminding that the PPV&FR Act not only safeguards plant breeders but also ensures farmers' rights, he urged local farmers to register indigenous plant varieties under the Act for their protection.
The event was also attended by Senior Scientist and Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Imphal East Dr Prabhabati Devi along with Subject Matter Specialist (Home Science) S Monibala Devi.
