Imphal, June 09 2024:
Salai Taret has urged the government to do all that is necessary at the earliest to restore peace and order in Jiribam district.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club here, Sunday, Salai Taret general secretary Saimom Mangang noted that after a lull in violence owing to conduct of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, fresh violence broke out in Jiri.
He pointed out that during the polls, Kuki militants did not attack Meetei villages but hours after the election results were declared, the villages were attacked with around 70 houses torched along with police outposts, and houses of forest ranger and media persons.
Strongly condemning the violence, he denounced central forces seemingly relishing the scene of Kuki militants setting on fire Meetei homes.
Instead of evacuating the people, the forces should have protected the village so as to prevent a repeat of what happened in Churachandpur and Moreh, the secretary opined and urged the government to take effective steps in this regard, adding that the people are disheartened with the government's lack of interest in putting an end to the conflict.
Saimom Mangang also urged for aiding people staying in relief camps to return to their homes, while taking all steps needed to restore peace and order in Jiribam.
Salai Taret vice president Kadamtala questioned where the so-called strength of Meetei MLAs/ministers has gone.
If the conflict continues any longer, the Meeteis will have no place to stay in their own land, he said and urged the MLAs/ministers to show their prowess and mitigate suffering of the people.
