Imphal, April 17 2025:
Terming the act of prohibiting the Meetei community from accessing the sacred sites of Koubru and Thangjing Hills, along with the disrespect shown towards the Salai Taret flag, as a serious matter and direct affront to the culture, traditions and beliefs of the community, Federation of Civil Societies Organisation (FOCS) has called on the Governor to outline the actions that will be taken against those involved in the acts of provocation.
In a statement, FOCS expressed deep concern over aggressive attitude and actions of Kuki community and their organisations, stating: "It is highly unfortunate that they have prevented the Meeteis from accessing the sacred sites of Koubru and Thangjing Hills.
Such disruptions, especially those connected to matters of faith and religion, should not be taken lightly".
Maintaining that the act represents a direct challenge to the religious beliefs of a particular community and constitutes a serious violation of the Right to Freedom of Religion in a secular country, the Federation demanded that the Governor clarify what actions will be taken in response to these issues.
The statement further noted that a recent video, which went viral on social media (Facebook), showing some Kuki militants disrespecting the Salai Taret flag of the Meetei community, is a deliberate attempt to provoke and insult the Meeteis.
"Appropriate action must be taken against those responsible, as their actions appear to be a calculated effort to incite conflict;" the FOCS pointed out and urged authorities concerned to take all necessary measuresto ensure that religious activities are conducted peacefully at locations revered by the Meetei community.
