Manipur, with its abundant water bodies such as ponds, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs has immense potential to develop a prosperous fisheries industry.
It has many fish species which are rich in omega-2 acids and can be commercialised.
He further said that Mahseer, also known as 'Ngara', is disappearing in other north-eastern states and suggested innovative approaches like the Mahseer Hatchery which can significantly boost fish production, and ensure self-sufficiency.
"This will not only help the local fish farmers but also cut down substantial costs incurred in procuring fish from outside the state," he remarked, while expressing belief that experts from MU would provide valuable inputs in this regard.
He also informed that the central government has introduced several schemes to develop the fisheries sector, such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.(PMMSY) to foster growth in the fisheries sector, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
In addition, NEC had instructed for development of various infrastructures to increase the fish yield in the north eastern region.
"In Manipur's context, the main issues are lack of infrastructure and technology and a proper market.
However, the government is trying its best to resolve these issues and seeking support from the experts," he assured, while appealing to the people to take advantage of these opportunities.
During the visit, the Governor inspected the exhibition by students of Department of Zoology, MU.
Certificates and honorary shawls were also presented to three progressive fish farmers and aqua entrepreneurs, along with release of various books.
Presided over by MU VC Prof N Lokendra Singh, the inaugural programme was attended by ICAR, New Delhi DDG Dr Joykrusna Jena; NFDB, Hyderabad chief executive Dr Bijay Kumar Behera; and ICAR-CICFR, Bhimtal director Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey as guests of honour.
