Imphal, May 08 2024:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairman justice UB Saha has pointed out the need for the Social Welfare Department (SWD) to introspect on its efforts regarding welfare activities taken up for the people of the state.
Speaking as chief guest during the observance of International Day of Families organised jointly by MHRC and Manipur University Department of Law under the theme "Duty of the Family towards Welfare of the Parents and Senior Citizens" at the University's Court Hall, on Wednesday, justice Saha expressed that due to advancement in science and technology and societal changes, the joint family structure which used to exist earlier has largely been replaced by nuclear families.
Furthermore, students increasingly pursue higher education and employment opportunities outside their home state or abroad, leaving behind their parents isolated without the expected care and support.
Recognising such issues, the government enacted the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act in 2007 .
Therefore, there is the need to raise awareness among the public about the benefits to be given to the parents under this Act.
While pointing out the need for the social welfare department to inspect the NGOs, societies and individ uals funded to run Old Age Home instead of remaining idle after sanctioning funds for the said purpose, he said that since the social welfare department exist for the welfare of the people, the role of the department in the society is significant.
He also highlighted his experience of coming across pathetic conditions of elderly people living in Old Age Homes during inspection visits.
As such, the chairman urged departments concerned to take up measures for strengthening the diminishing bond of love between the parents and their children.
Presided over by Manipur University vice chancellor Prof Naorem Lokendro, the function was also attended by Social Welfare director Ng Uttam, MHRC member Kangjam Khagendra, MU Department of Law head Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh and DM College of Science retired associate professor Dr S Ingotombi as guests of honour.
