Robinson Moyon honoured with Mother Language Award

Language activist R Robinson Moyon was honoured with the Khum-bongmayum Gourahari-Madhumati Mother Language Award 2024 by Sahitya Thoupanglup, Imphal on the occasion of International Mother Language Day observance held at Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives auditorium, Imphal on Wednesday.
Manipur Legislative Assembly secretary Karam Meghajit and Pettigrew College, Ukhrul assistant professor Dr H Shimreingam attended the event as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Sahitya Akademi award winning writer Saratchand Thiyam informed that the award is presented every year on the occasion of International Mother Language Day with the award recipients are selected from among the 33 tribes of the state, who work tirelessly for promoting their mother language.
Winners of the last two years' award were from Kom and Kabui communities, informed Saratchand, who also spoke briefly about the origin of the day and how Sahitya Thoupanglup began the observance from 2013 onwards in the state.
In his address, Karam Meghajit said that every Manipuri should feel proud of having their own language and script, which are integral part of a civilisation.
The award winner R Robinson Moyon is a writer and language activist born to R Wangtha Moyon and Pekung Chara on April 2, 1958 at Komlathabi village in Chandel district.
A graduate by qualification, he worked as a librarian in South-East Manipur College, Komlathabi from 1985 and retired in 2014 .
He had penned two books in Manipuri language - Mahakna Hairammi (1981) and Kappu Kapninglakida (2014) .
He has been honoured with Padma Award by Naharol Sahitya Premi Samit, Imphal in 2022, and Special Award (Manipuri) by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching in 2017 .
Chongtham Ronikumar's book 'Wangmada Satpi Thadoi' was also released on the occasion.
Tongbram Amarjit gave a brief review of the book.
Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district, and Ningol Khut Manipur, Wangjing also observed the International Mother Language Day at Khorirol Shanglen Wangjing in Thoubal district on Wednesday with book release and discussion on Manipuri language.
Khorirol Sandoklup president Tongbram Babulal, Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district president Moirangthem Rajendra and Ningol Khut president Khundongbam Gunamani Leima were presidium members of the event during which Nahakpam Biren's novel 'Mamal Naidraba Khudol' was also released with Ibosana Yambem presenting a brief review of the book.
In the panel discussion on Manipuri language, Tongbram Babulal spoke on 'Language and Literature'; Yumnam Wanglen Thoibi on 'Contribution of Meeteilol in Manipuri literature'; associate professor Sengoi Sanasam on 'Possibilities of Manipuri language going extinct and ways to prevent'; and Bhorot Sanasam on 'Short stories and dialectics' as resource persons.
In connection with the observance of International Mother Language day, Lilong Haoreibi College Department of English, Department of Manipuri, IQAC and research and seminar committee organised a national seminar at the college.
The national seminar was attended by Manipur University Department of English former head Prof Th Ratankumar Singh as chief guest, Lilong Haoreibi College principal Prof Md A Sattar as president and Department of Manipuri SR College, Cachar (Assam) Dr Abdul Khair Choudhury as guest of honour.
During the seminar, Prof Th Ratankumar spoke on 'Significance of learning through mother tongue with respect to NEP 2020' and Abdul Khair Choudhury on 'Meitei Pangal Khunnaida Meiteilon'.
Meanwhile, Meetei Erol Evek Loin-asillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) observed international mother language day at its head office in a simple function.
