HC directs completion of witness examination within 8 weeks

Imphal, April 06 2025:
The High Court of Manipur ordered completion of witness examination within eight weeks in connection with the election petition filed against MLA Karam Shyam, who got elected to the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Langthabal assembly constituency in Imphal West district.
Hearing of the election petition filed by Okram Joy Singh at the High Court against MLA Shyam was conducted on April 3 .
To take a decision on miscellaneous application and other issues and objection pending before advocate commissioner, the matter was discussed at the court of the chief justice.
The court advised (respondent no 1) Karam Shyam to complete witness examination within eight weeks with full cooperation.
The court also fixed 3pm of April 8 for resumption of witness examination.
Okram Joy mentioned in his election petition that Karam Shyam did not mention pending criminal case against him at the time of filing nomination for the election, of not disclosing area of his residential building and furnished wrong information on his assets and educational qualification.
The petition further alleged Karam Shyam of distributing money to public, beating voters and disrupting election process and demanded declaration of Shyam's victory in the election as null and void.
After admitting the election petition, the high court began witness examination before the appointed advocate commissioner.
However, Karam Shyam failed to show up physically during witness examination and none of the witnesses listed on his side turned up.
