Two held in murder of man on open street

Imphal, September 08 2026: After a man was killed at Thangal Keithel last night, two accused have been arrested.

Sources said that one Ankush Das (46) from Borojalenga village, Silchar, Assam was sitting on a bench along with two others at Thangal Keithel near Axis Bank when Yendrembam Paona took out a machete and attacked Ankush Das by slashing the latter's neck two times.

Ankush Das, who was staying in a rented room of the Bank of Baroda, Thangal Bazar building, died on the spot.

The dead body was later deposited at RIMS morgue for post mortem after the inquest of the body and its surrounding area.

City Police registered a case last night and checked CCTV cameras installed in the nearby and surrounding areas of the incident site.

After identifying the accused persons, a team of police arrested Yendrembam Paona (60) s/o Kulla and Laishram Ngongo (39) s/o (L) Munal, both from Kanglasiphai, from their respective residences.

A two-wheeler used by the accused to reach the crime scene has also been recovered by the police team this morning.

On preliminary interrogation, Yendrembam Paona admitted to have committed the crime with the motive of avenging an unfair dealing involving contraband ganja.

Paona said that he came to Thangal Keithel along with the co-accused on a two-wheeler with the intention of killing Ankush Das.

Blood-stained clothes worn by the main accused during the incident were also seized by police by observing necessary formalities.

The two accused persons were produced before the Duty Magistrate, Imphal West this evening and the Duty Magistrate remanded the two in police custody till September 14.According to the sources, Yendrembam Paona was recently released on bail from a jail in Assam where he was lodged for around three months in connection with an ND&PS case taken up by Assam Police.

On the other hand, all the shops and other business establishments along Thangal Keithel Mall road were closed this afternoon in protest against last night's incident.
