Imphal, August 21 2025:
Transgender social activist Malem Thongam has announced plans to embark on a 2,436-km solo cycle expedition from Delhi to Imphal with the message of restoring normalcy in the state and ensuring free movement on national highways.
In this regard, the activist has appealed to the government not to enforce any restrictions on his journey.
On Thursday, Malem submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla via BJP Manipur Pradesh president Adhikarimayum Sharda.
He urged that free passage on the state's highways be allowed by August 28 so his journey would not be disrupted, while pleaded that the President's Rule administration in the state should not impede his effort.
Interacting with the media at the BJP office, Malem said that his endeavour is to bring an end to the conflict which began on May 3, 2023, pave the way for change and return to normal life.
The activist recalled staging a hunger strike in Delhi in February 2024 to draw the attention of the Indian government, but after BJP replaced the AAP government in the capital, Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against him for his protest.
This has forced him to travel frequently to Delhi for case hearings, with the next one scheduled for August 23, Malem informed.
He said that the repeated travel is a financial burden, though public support has helped him manage.
He added that free movement on the highways would ease not just his own travel but also the hardships faced by many, especially the Meetei community, who have been restricted for over two years.
Malem said that he will continue his efforts for peace and normalcy in Manipur and will embark on the cycle journey from Delhi to Imphal after his court hearing.
