Bishnupur, June 28 2025:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra on Saturday visited two relief camps being set up at Thangjing Sindam Shanglen and Chingu Moirang Thangjing Guest House in Moirang, to assess the conditions of the internally displaced persons taking shelter there.
During the visit, the IDPs taking shelter at the Thangjing Shindam Sanglen relief camp informed the MPCC president that the essential commodities such as rice, lentils, edible oil, salt, and detergents provided every 10 days are insufficient.
At the same time, the inmates mentioned that although doctors visit the camp weekly, medicines are not provided on time, leaving some individuals still suffering from illness.
They also pointed out that sewing machines, looms, embroidery machines and computers have yet to be provided.
Concerning these issues, they urged the government to either make arrangements for their safe return to their respective homes or ensure sustainable means of livelihood in the meantime.
After hearing the grievances of the IDPs, MPCC president K Meghachandra expressed concern over the government's inaction despite the sanctioning of substantial funds.
He pointed out that while Rs 145 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of fabricated houses for the IDPs and another Rs 475 crore for the procurement of television and computer sets, there has been little progress on the ground, adding that with such funds, needs for construction of shelters and distribution of TVs and computers could have easily been fulfilled.
Meghachandra also highlighted serious gaps in the education of IDP students and stressed the urgent need for a dedicated health policy for the displaced population.
He criticised the government for failing to address these critical issues and called for immediate action to ensure the IDPs receive the support they urgently need Noting that the people want a popularly elected government, Meghachandra said that BJP's failure to form a government despite having an absolute majority clearly reflects its weakness.
"This inability to establish a government has not only caused serious hardships to the public but has also slowed the pace of developmental activities in the state".
The Congress leader also said that the Prime Minister's failure to visit Manipur even once while the state is in turmoil clearly indicates his lack of concern.
"While the PM could have intervened and resolve the conflict between the two communities, by visiting the state and facilitating dialogue, his continued silence has only worsened the suffering of the people and prolonged the chaotic situation," he contended.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that several state and centrally sponsored schemes have also failed to reach the people of the state.
