Licypriya asks Govt to rethink on building dams

Imphal, June 27 2022: World's youngest climate activist, Licypriya Kangujam of Manipur has urged the governments concerned to rethink their agendas of building mega dams in north-eastern region.

The 10 years old activist said, "We're drowning and our leaders are watching.

I want our leaders to act quickly to help the flood victims.

Maximum roads are washed away in the floods.

People are taking shelter with tent houses on the highways.

We need to reduce dams and also we need massive tree plantations to fight this climate crisis".

She made this statement with reference to the Assam floods which has killed 117 people and displaced over 73 lakh people so far this year.

While contending that government's relief and rescue works are not enough as people continue to struggle for drinking water, sanitation, food and shelter; she pointed out that many children have lost their parents and homes, and over 10 million people displaced and roads damaged badly.

Licypriya, who is in Guwahati for her summer break, has been spending her time helping the people of flood-hit Assam by distributing relief to the flood affected people of Hojai and Nagaon districts for the last three days.

She distributed ration items including dal, rice, salt, oil, wheat, onion and potatoes to the flood affected victims.

She also interacted with the children staying in the relief camps and listened to their stories.

Licypriya further said: "We have to reduce dams in the north eastern region as we're an ecologically very fragile region.

More dams mean more floods.

In the next few years, whole North East India will be submerged inside the water".

She also suggested that electricity can be generated from solar power source instead of depending on hydro power projects.

"Let the rivers flow in its natural way.

It will save our planet and our future", she pointed out.

The child activist has so far extended aid to over 100 families and is planning to reach out to Cachar district where flood is extreme at the moment.

On her visit to Assam, Licypriya was felicitated by Manipuri community of Assam like Guwahati Meira Paibi groups, Guwahati Manipuri Social Organization (GMSO), Manipuri Shahitya Parishad, Hojai and All Assam Manipuri Students' Association (AAMSU) and gave their blessings tor more success In her life.
