Nestle India expands 'Serve Safe Food' project

Expanding the geographical footprint of Project "Serve Safe Food" in Manipur, Nestle India has continued its collaboration with the Food Safety Administration, Manipur, and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) to train over 300 street food vendors in Imphal, taking the total to more than 800 vendors in the state.
According to a statement from Nestle India, Project "Serve Safe Food" has already benefitted over 92,800 street food vendors across 26 states and four UTs by educating them on health, hygiene, safe food handling, waste disposal and entrepreneurship.
The training programme equips vendors with the knowledge to improve their food handling practices.
Health and family welfare and food safety administration special secretary Somorjit Salam said that Manipur offers a blend of natural beauty, rich culture and historical sites, making it a compelling travel destination.
He said that street food is an integral component of this blend and the government intends to further strengthen this culture and empower street food vendors in the state by upskilling them on food hygiene and safety.
He expressed gratitude for the collaboration between NASVI, the Food Safety Administration and Nestle India in helping achieve this objective through Project "Serve Safe Food" .
Nestle India's Sustainability and Societal Initiatives head Dr Taruna Saxena said that the company is consistently working to improve the food safety environment in India by going beyond the quality and safety of its own products.
She said that the project empowers street food vendors by upgrading their skills through training on hygiene and food safety practices, helping to improve their awareness around food safety and hygiene.
She added that Nestle India has been scaling up the project and is confident it will bring about positive behavioural change over time and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the vendors' businesses.
Nestle India launched Project "Serve Safe Food" in 2016 and has trained street food vendors several states across the country.
