WSC celebrates National Handloom Day

The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated on Thursday at the Weaver Service Centre (WSC), Porompat, under the aegis of Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles.
The function was attended by Imphal East ADC Dr M Johnson, Sant Kabir awardee W Shaya Devi and MSME Technology Centre, Imphal deputy director Dr Sinam Yoirenthoiba Meetei as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, WSC, Imphal deputy director Sarbeswar Das pointed out that National Handloom Day is held on August 7 every year since 2015, following its official declaration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai.
The date was chosen to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, He informed that aligning with the nationwide celebration, the 11th edition of National Handloom Day is being observed by the WSC at the central, college, and cluster levels.
The celebration serves as an expression of gratitude and recognition for the invaluable contribution of handloom artisans to the nation, said the deputy director.
Highlighting the status of handloom in Manipur, he noted that the state is home to around 2.20 lakh weavers, all of whom are women.
Given the rising unemployment in the state, he encouraged unemployed male youths to also consider taking up weaving as a livelihood.
He added that various schemes under the Ministry of Textiles, including the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP), offer support in the form of skill training, MUDRA loans, 15 percent subsidy on raw materials, provision of looms post-training and construction of worksheds.
As part of the celebration, Handloom Pehchan cards, Samarth Skill Up-gradation Training certificates and yarn passbooks were distributed to women weavers.
