Imphal, August 07 2025:
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Manipur on Friday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and the possibility of flash floods in Senapati and Ukhrul districts.
The alert comes as widespread monsoon activity is expected to impact the entire Northeast region over the next several days.
According to IMD's latest bulletin, Manipur, along with Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura, is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from August 7 to 12 .
The weather system will be most intense on August 8, with Arunachal Pradesh likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall of 21 cm or more with IMD issuing red alert.
The monsoon trough currently lies close to the Himalayan foothills and stretches from Ferozepur through Chandigarh, Dehradun, Valmiki Nagar and into Arunachal Pradesh, enhancing moisture-laden winds and intensifying rainfall over the Northeast.
In Manipur, Senapati and Ukhrul districts have been identified as particularly vulnerable to flash floods.
In general, IMD has warned of potential localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas, and disruption of traffic in urban centres.
Reduced visibility, minor damage to kutcha roads, and the possibility of damage to weak structures and standing crops have also been flagged.
Localised landslides and mudslides may occur, particularly in hilly regions, with the risk of riverine flooding in some catchments.
Saturday through Monday carry no specific warnings for Manipur, though thunderstorms and lightning are still likely at isolated places.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the state may again receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations, but no formal alert has been issued.
Rainfall activity during this period will be scattered and less intense than on Friday.
