Welfare of elderlies stressed on Day of Older Persons

As observed on October 1 across the globe annually, the 'International Day of Older Persons' was observed at Nambashi Horton village, Kasom Khullen Road in Kam-jong district on Tuesday.
Observed under the theme Ageing with Dignity', the event recognised the invaluable contributions made by the older people to the society.
It was jointly organised by District Social Welfare Office, Kamjong and Rural People Development Organisation (RPDO), Heirok Part-II.
Attending the observance as chief guest, Kamjong ADM H L Jain stated that older people are a vital part of the society and they are sources of knowledge and experience.
"We need to take care of our elders and support them to remain active and engage in guiding our younger generation," he said, while adding that the younger generation should honour the dignity of older people.
During the observance, gifts were presented to some elderly people.
Kamjong district social welfare officer Angom Tamphasana and Nambashi Horton village headman Joshua Marchang attended the event as functional president and guest of honour respectively.
Secretaries and office bearers of RPDO and Senior Citizen Home, Nambashi Horton village also attended the function.
In Noney district, International Day of Older Persons 2024 was observed on Tuesday at the Noney DC office conference hall.
Noney ADM Stiff Khapudang, along with SDOs, DLOs, DC office staff and other officials attended the observance organised by District Social Welfare Office, Noney.
The theme for the 34th International Day of Older Persons is "Ageing with Dignity: The importance of strengthening care and support systems for older persons worldwide" .
World Heart Day, themed "Use Heart for Action," and International Day of Old er Persons, on the theme "Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies, " were also observed on Tuesday at the Noney Primary Health Centre.
Organised by the District Health Society, the event was attended by Dr Zianthuilung Kamei, chief medical officer; Dr Azin Maringmei, district leprosy officer; and Dr Dei Gratia Lamlee Kamei, district nodal officer National Programme for Prevention & Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP.-NCD), as chief guest, guest of honour, and functional president respectively.
Participants included ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) and ASHA facilitators, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, alongside Kalingjuanliu Panmei, district programme manager District Health Society, and Lankuthuan George Kamei, district finance manager District Health Society.
As part of the programme, Thuigongliu Gangmei from Rangkhung Part-1 village was felicitated for winning the State Best ASHA Award 2024, recognising her outstanding contribution to Heart Disease Screening and Care Services.
A training on Extended Package Services (EPS) for ASHAs under Comprehensive Primary Health Care was also held at the same venue.
Under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in collaboration with Senapati district administration, District Social Welfare Office, and 7 Sisters Foundation observed International Day of Older Persons at Senapati multipurpose hall on Tuesday.
The Day was observed under the theme 'Ageing with Dignity: The importance of strengthening care and support system for older person worldwide'.
Senapati district included in the 51 districts of the country under Rashtriya Vayoshi Yojana observed the International Day for Older Persons with the distribution of aids and assisted living devices to senior citizens by ALIMCO.
Addressing the gathering, Senapati deputy commissioner Mamoni Doley said that everyone should look upon the health and needs of the older persons who have paved the path for the younger generation.
She also applauded the sacrifices of older persons that make the present generation to stand with pride, courage, energy and enthusiasm in their work.
The DC mentioned that Union cabinet has recently approved health coverage for senior citizens of 70 years and above irrespective of the income with the benefits of up to five lakhs for free health insurance covers on family basis and issue of PMJAY card.
She urged the Social Welfare Department to take further survey and make efforts to include more in the beneficiaries list.
Mamoni also mentioned that permission for opening senior citizens office in the office campus has been granted.
Reiterating on the difficulty faces by older persons, she appealed to create awareness on health and support system for older persons should be noted.
As part of the programme, DC Mamoni Doley distributed wheelchairs, walking stick, hearing aid, knee braces and various other assisted living devices to senior citizens.
The event was attended by Senapati district social welfare officer Khullak Tungran Dangsawa, ALIMCO officials, DWSO staff and Senapati Senior Citizen and its member.
