Vendors urge TLL to relocate Wednesday Market

Ukhrul, February 28 2025: Vendors at the Ava Market in Ukhrul town have urged the Tangkhul Leihsak Long (TLL), the local trade council, to relocate the weekly Wednesday Market currently conducted near the lone women's market in Phungreitang bazar.

Initiated by the TLL, the Wednesday Market aims to provide essential goods to the public at prices lower than those in the markets.

However, the Zaoranao Shinshim Vendors' Association (ZSVA) has expressed concerns that the proximity of this market to Ava Market is adversely affecting their daily businesses.

In a letter addressed to TLL president on Thursday, ZSVA chairperson Soso Zimik and secretary NK Yaomila acknowledged the council's valuable service to the community but emphasised the detrimental impact the Wednesday Market has on their livelihoods.

"We are all part of your esteemed organisation and we highly appreciate your services to the public, but without respecting our voices, it has become a hindrance for us," they stated.

The Ava Market currently supports 165 members from across the district, who engage in various trades including the sale of fresh vegetables, fruits, dried and fresh fish, among other goods, informed the vendors' association, highlighting their commitment to providing the best possible service to customers from both within the state and beyond.

Despite a previous request made to TLL on December 4 last year to reconsider the market's location, no action has been taken.

As a result, the vendors' association in a meeting held on February 26 decided to reiterate their grievances, the vendors' association said and warned that if their concerns continue to be ignored, all vendors operating under Ava Market would resort to conducting their business in the restricted open areas as a measure to safeguard their interests.
