Awareness programme on POCSO Act held

A one day awareness programme on POCSO Act and other legal mechanism was organised by Women Action for Development (WAD) in collaboration with Ningombam Ideal Youth Club in Thoubal district, on Sunday.
The main aim of the programme was to sensitize and make aware the locals of Thoubal Ningombam on the issue of rising crime against women and children and legal mechanisms necessary to be learned by every single person to respond to curb the same, WAD said in a press release.
Sobita Mangsatabam, secretary WAD and Ningombam Arunkumar, vice president Ningombam Ideal Youth Club, were the resource persons of the day's awareness programme.
Sobita stressed on the role of the community to response to crime against women in terms of providing psychosocial support and to avoid stigmatization to the victims.
She also talked about the steps on how to approach the nearest police station by any person when coming to know that a sexual assault has been committed to a minor girl or a boy under the age of 18 years as per the POCSO Act, 2012, and drew the attention of the participants to report such cases directly to the DGP if the nearest police station fails to entertain the complaint.
Sobita continued that it is not only the women or girls need to be made aware of the ,issue but also sons, brothers, fathers, etc., need to understand the issue.
The salient features of POCSO Act were also highlighted as the main topic of the programme, which was participated by the local youths, then parents and meira paibi activists of the area, the release further said.
