Tangkhul, Kuki leaders resolve conflict

Representatives of Tangkhul civil society organisations and Kuki village chiefs from Litan area signed a formal undertaking on Saturday at Litan police station, to resolve the issue arising from the recent assault of passengers on an Ukhrul bound vehicle at Mongkot Chepu.
The incident, which occurred around 7:30 pm on June 26, involved a violent attack on a public transport vehicle travelling toward Ukhrul by some Kuki miscreants.
The driver and several passengers were reportedly assaulted, and the vehicle was damaged in the attack.
The assault sparked widespread condemnation and heightened concerns over safety along the Imphal-Ukhrul road, a key lifeline in the hill region.
According to the undertaking, the agreement was reached in the presence of leaders from Tangkhul community representing the victims and Kuki village chiefs representing the accused.
The Kuki leaders acknowledged the involvement of individuals from their community and condemned the assault as a "barbaric inhuman act" that disrupted peace and endangered public safety.
The three accused in the assault were identified as L Lunminjoy, son of L Ngamjang; B Ngamminlun, son of L Lhunsel, and L Lunhao, son of L Ngamal.
The agreement recorded that the Kuki village chiefs have taken collective responsibility for the incident and pledged to prevent any recurrence of such acts in the future.
To maintain peace and restore public confidence in travel along the Imphal-Ukhrul road, several resolutions were made through the undertaking.
It was agreed that any future incidents of violence or harassment originating from Mongkot Chepu jurisdiction would be dealt with strictly, leaving no room for negotiation or compromise.
The chief of Mongkot Chepu also agreed to respect and honour the customs and traditions of Tangkhul Naga landowners, an important cultural condition asserted by the Tangkhul side.
Additionally, Mongkot Chepu was directed to submit its full household and village census to the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) within 48 hours from the time of signing.
A monetary compensation of Rs 5 lakh is to be paid by July 1, to the victims' side as part of the agreement.
The undertaking was signed by Tangkhul leaders including Tangkhul Naga Zingsho Longphang chairman AS Nathan, Katho Katamnao Long president Mashringmi Zingkhai, UDTWA secretary RS Genesis Ma-hung, ATDU Ukhrul vice-president Leishi Sara, and Tangkhul Aze Wungnao Welfare Association president Wungreikhan Kasar.
On the Kuki side, the signatories included Mongkot Chepu village chief L Lunminthang, Mongkot Chepu village authority general secretary L Thangsei, Yaolen village chief Jamlet Khongsai, L Sareikhong village chief B Hemthang, and Patleiyao village chief L Seijang.
