Kakching, August 21 2025:
Central Executive Committee of Tripura Manipuri Student-Youth Coordination Committee, has reportedly submitted a memorandum to the director of School Education, government of Tripura, for recruitment of Manipuri language teachers in the notified schools where Manipuri has been introduced as a subject since 1998 .
The memorandum stated that although Manipuri was introduced at the primary level in 1998 and later notified as a first language in some schools, with provisions for its upgrade to upper primary and secondary levels, no Manipuri teachers have been recruited to date.
It also lamented that there are no guidelines or budgetary allocations for implementation, and no infrastructure has been developed for Manipuri education.
The committee pointed out that, despite these shortcomings, the state government's web portal continues to display that Manipuri is being taught from Class I to VIII, which it claimed is contrary to the ground reality.
Expectations for progress after creation of the directorate for Kokborok and Other Minority Languages were not met, as the directorate has no authority to recommend recruitment or infrastructural development for Manipuri education, the committee contended, adding that the situation is akin to deceiving the Manipuri society in the state and violation of Article 350A of the Constitution.
To rectify such anomalies, the committee placed a four-point charter of demands which included recruitment of adequate Manipuri language teachers, preparation of a comprehensive guideline for Manipuri education, allocation of specific funds in the budget and development of necessary infrastructure.
The committee also warned that it would be compelled to launch a democratic movement if its demands are not addressed.
