CBI takes over 5 cases of crimes against women from MSCW

Imphal, September 14 2023: All five (5) cases related with crimes committed against women during the communal violence since May 3 taken up by Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) has been formally taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) .

The cases include 2 regular cases and 3 suo moto cases.

In an exclusive interview with The People's Chronicle, MSCW chairperson Ulka Salam said that the commission conducted a spot enquiry on May 12 into the incident of assault of one Tokpam Malem (27) of Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai and Naorem ongbi Manglembi Devi (57) of Sangaiprou by CRPF assistant commandant Daniel Hmar who was also from the same locality and made a field visit on May 22.The commission sought a report from Imphal West SP on May 15 after a regular case was filed to the commission by Manglembi.

The SP submitted the report on May 19 .

In connection with the gang rape of a Meitei woman in Churachandpur on May 3, the commission also took up a suo moto case and instructed the deputy commissioner of Imphal west and Bishnupur to provide necessary shelter, financial assistance, counselling and medicines to the victim, Ulka Salam said while adding that the One Stop Centre of Churachandpur and Imphal West provided report to the Commission after the DGP was asked to do so on August 10 .

She further informed that the Commission also took up a suo moto case in connection with the naked parading of two women which occurred on May 4 .

In addition, the commission also instructed the central administrator of the One Stop Centre of Churachandpur to seriously look into the matter.

The DGO submitted a report in this regard to the Commission on July 22.The Commission also sought a report from the Manipur DGP in connection with the missing case of Luwangbi Lingthoingambi Hijam (17) filed by her mother Hijam ongbi Laitonjam ningol Jayashree Devi of Sagolband Tera Tongbram Leikai.

The DGP submitted the report on August 14.The commission also took up another suo moto case in connection with the report of atrocities committed by central security forces to the meira paibi women.

All these cases have been taken over by the CBI, she added.

The MSCW chairperson further stated that the commission has been taking up actions against various cases related with crimes against women for the last many years.

In addition to taking up cases on crimes being committed against women during the ethnic violence in the state, the commission has also been providing various relief materials like mats, sanitary pads, mosquito coils, clothes, toys, bed sheets, multivitamins and other edibles to the inmates of relief camps opened in different parts of the state.

Moreover, the commission in association with the state medical directorate also made arrangements for deputing doctors and nurses to relief camps where there are no medical facilities, she said while adding that pregnant women in relief camps opened at RIMS, JNIMS and Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel were also aided with fruits, multivitamins and calcium tablets.
