Workshop on "Bell Metal" kicks off

Imphal, September 14 2023:
A 14-days long workshop cum training on "Bell Metal" organised by the Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles, Government of Manipur, began today at Heirangoithong Aheibam Leikai.
The inaugural ceremony of the workshop was attended by Handlooms & Textiles, Joint Director, E Jeeten; Mutua Museum director, Mutua Bahadur and Bell Metal master trainer Aheibam Gope as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, E Jeeten stated that the workshop cum training was organised to promote bell metal crafts and in connection with the effort to obtain GI Tag for "Thengga" .

Highlighting that many States have already obtained GI Tagd for their locally made bell metal products, he stressed on the need to promote and preserve traditional bell metal crafts of Manipur.
He continued that though Wangkhei Phi and Rani Phi have been given GI Tags, it is still important to promote the indigenous handloom & handicraft sector.
Mutua Bahadur shared that people of Manipur especially those belonging to the metal casting professional group also known as "Aheibam" have been engaged in the trade of metal casting since the time of King Loyumba in the 11th century.
As part of the event, kits were also distributed to the trainees.
