Imphal, July 14 2024:
Thangmeiband MLA Kh Joykisan has opined that violence in the state could substantially reduce if the chief minister calls back the village volunteers by convincing them that the conflict is fallout of the government crackdown against illegal immigrants and drug smugglers and there are enough state and central forces to handle the problem.
Speaking at the inauguration of the office building of Namthanlong Women's Society (Thangmeiband Kabui Women's Organisation), and Namthanlong Youth Club and a prayer hall, on Sunday as the chief guest, MLA Joykisan maintained that the chief minister has a huge role to play in trying to put an end to the present crisis.
He stated that CM Biren views the crisis not as a war between communities but as a conflict arising out of the government's drive against drug lords and smugglers.
He suggested that if the CM convinces village volunteers that adequate state and central forces are available for such a purpose, the crisis would scale down significantly.
He also emphasised the importance of unity among the Kuki community and their MLAs to uphold Manipur's territorial integrity by putting aside historical grievances as all the communities including Meeteis, Nagas and Kukis have coexisted harmoniously for the past many decades.
As emotional unity fosters geographical unity, in case the Kuki MLAs appeal for peaceful coexistence among indigenous peoples, the crisis could be reduced by 80 percent, he maintained.
While pointing out futility of violence, Joykisan noted the geographical barriers that hinder interaction between hill and valley residents and also emphasised that maintaining geographical integrity while respecting community integrity is crucial for all parties involved.
Joykishan also stressed that it is not the time for blame games or for political parties to prioritise gaining political mileage.
He stressed that it is the responsibility of every individual, regardless of political affiliation, to work towards restoring peace and tranquillity in the state along with highlighting the importance of extending support and cooperation to the displaced individuals who are bearing the brunt of the crisis.
The function was also attended by Namthanlong 'Khunbu' L Poushonglung, 'Khullakpa' Gaimeibung Kamei, TKWO advisor Aluraona Kamson, NYC president Gaigonmei Kamei and TKWO president Ashimlu Rongmei as presidium members.
