Imphal, August 07 2025:
Union Minister of State for Housihg and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu has stated that no water body rejuvenation projects were taken up in Manipur under the first phase of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 1.0), even as 21 projects have been approved under AMRUT 2.0 with a total cost of Rs 4.28 crore.
The information came in response to a question raised by Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam during the ongoing session of the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Dr Bimol sought details on the number and location of water bodies rejuvenated in Manipur under AMRUT 1.0 and 2.0, and the funds sanctioned and released for these projects.
In his reply, Tokhan Sahu stated that water is a state subject and implementation responsibility of the respective state government and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) .
The Centre only supplements state's efforts through financial and technical support under various missions.
The minister clarified that while no water bodies were taken up under AMRUT 1.0 in Manipur, AMRUT 2.0 has supported 21 water body rejuvenation projects across districts such as Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Thoubal.
Projects include public pond restoration in areas like Bishnupur ward no 5, Sanapat community hall in Andro, and Thoubal Khunou Makha Leikai in Thoubal district.
The costs of individual projects range from Rs 0.09 crore to Rs 0.43 crore.
These projects are part of a broader effort to ease water stress in urban areas by improving water storage capacity.
The ministry noted that funds are released to states and union territories, not on a project-by-project basis, but within the framework of the mission's guidelines.
Meanwhile, Dr Bimol also flagged a procedural concern regarding a separate question on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) that had been accepted through ballot but did not appear in the final list of questions for the Lok Sabha sitting on August 6 .
According to the MP's office, the question appeared at Serial No 193 on the ballot but was inexplicably omitted from the final session list.
Dr Bimol has written to authorities concerned seeking clarification in this regard.
