Nagas should be proud of forefathers: Dinganglung

Hill Areas Committee (HAC) chairman Dinganglung Gangmei has called upon the Naga people to be proud of their forefathers who fought the British and strive for instilling the same spirit of valour among the younger generation.
Speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the 2nd General Thangal Memorial Open Football Tournament, 2025, which Charai Thangal FC won on Monday at Mayangkhang local ground in Senapati dis trict, Dinganglung pointed out that Manipur was made up with contributions from different communities living in the state like the mighty India, which was made a country through sweat and tears of the forefathers.

"General Thangal was a courageous freedom fighter who was hanged while fighting for the people's rights and the motherland," he recounted, while reiterating that Nagas should be proud for their forefathers who fought the mighty British.
Regarding the present situation in the state, Dinganglung said that people have every right to demand what is enshrined in the Constitution but should be done in a democratic way as violence will not bring any good.
"There would be no conflict as long as people stick to constitutional means of demand," he said, appealing to people not to fall prey to factionalism or tribalism, which is the root cause of conflict.
"The Nagas have been demanding solution according to what has been signed in Framework Agreement," Dinganglung Gangmei said and urged people to support whichever group is in peace process as no development will come without peace.
The HAC chairman also urged people to observe the Patriots Day in a grander way as it is not solely for a particular community but for all who fought against the British rule.
As the functional president of the valedictory function of the tournament which began on March 10, Thangal Students' Union (TAJ) president KD Lamronba reminded the gathering about the legacy of General Thangal who courageously fought the British to safeguard the motherland.
He also noted that the organising committee had a hard time organising the tournament due to the prevailing situation in the state and with the President s rule in the state.
He thanked MLA Dikho and the HAC chairman for their concern towards the Thangal community through their presence.
The Thangal student leader stated that the event reminisces the legacy of General Thangal who courageously fought against the British rule to safeguard the motherland.
His selfless contribution along with many unnamed soldiers had enabled the people to live freely today, he said adding that the football tournament was a testament to enduring, spirit of General Thangal.
