Durand Cup unites fans in strife-torn state

After two years of unrest, Manipur, the cradle of Indian football, is basking in the glow of normalcy with the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, kicking off at the packed 35,000-capacity Khuman Lampak Stadium.
The event signals a hopeful return to peace, bringing together communities through their shared love for the beautiful game.
The opening match between home grown giants NEROCA FC and TRAU FC drew an electrified crowd, with fans, including excite.d school students, filling the stands well before the kick-off.
The vibrant atmosphere was a testament to the state's passion for football and its yearning for unity.
"After two years of violence, hosting the Durand Cup in Imphal feels like a blessing," said Rangita Yumnam, a local football enthusiast, braving the summer heat to cheer for her team.

Another young fan echoed the same sentiments: "We're thrilled to witness the Durand Cup after everything we've been through.
This event proves peace is slowly returning to Manipur" .
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the chief guest, officially inaugurated the tournament with a symbolic kick-off, following a vibrant display of Indian cultural performances.
The sold-out match ended in an exhilarating 1-1 draw, leaving fans hopeful for more thrilling moments in the tournament.
For a state that has produced sporting icons like Mirabai Chanu, Mary Kom, and Sarita Devi, the Durand Cup's return is more than a sporting event - it's a celebration of resilience and camaraderie.
As one TRAU FC supporter put it, "A win for my team would be the icing on the cake, but this tournament itself is a victory for Manipur's spirit" .
The opening match of the 134th Indian Oil-Durand Cup - Imphal Chapter, was also attended by Chief of Army Staff General Upen-dra Dwivedi, senior officials from the Manipur government, top Army officials, the state DGP, and the security advisor.
Organised by the Indian Army with support from Manipur Government, the tournament's return to Imphal has reignited passion among local football fans.
The opening ceremony featured traditional performing arts, which captivated the crowd before the match, adding colour and cultural vibrancy to the event.
To allow fans to attend, the Manipur government declared a half-day holiday.
This year's Imphal Chapter features Group F, which includes four formidable teams: TRAU FC, NEROCA FC, Indian Navy Football Team, and Real Kashmir FC.
The matches will continue till August 12 .
