Ukhrul, October 09 2024:
In a spirited effort to promote a drug-free lifestyle among the youth, Kamjong district administration, in collaboration with Eastern Students' Union (ESU) and Nongman Village Students' Union, organised a two-day 7-a-side football and volleyball tournament.
The event, themed 'Role of Youth in Combating Drugs', took place on October 7 and on Tuesday, at Nongman village under Phungyar Block of Kamjong district as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
The tournament was attended by ESU president Wungnaothan Chithung, Nongman village headman Ishmael Sareo, along with other village elders, church leaders, and community supporters.
In his opening speech, Wungnaothan commended the Kamjong deputy commissioner for initiating such a valuable programme, particularly for Nongman and its neighbouring villages located at the border.
Reflecting on the crucial role of such events in fostering a positive and drug-free environment for the youth, he encouraged young people to avoid drugs, pursue healthy lifestyles, and act as messengers to those struggling with substance abuse.
Echoing the same sentiment, Ishmael Sareo expressed gratitude to the district administration and urged it to host similar programmes more frequently, while emphasising the need to redirect youth focus from drugs to sports.
The tournament drew five teams from surrounding villages, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship.
Nongman Youth Club clinched the title in football competition, while Gangster Volleyball Club was adjudged winner of the volleyball event.
In addition to sports competitions, a Walkathon and Signature Campaign took place, attracting enthusiastic participation of around 400 youths from nearby villages.
This vibrant display helped spread the vital message of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
