Imphal, March 21 2025:
Women Against Crime (WAC) has raised serious concerns over the recent cases of death of young married women in the state.
Briefing the media at WAC's Canchipur office on Friday, secretary A Robita Leima cited recent incidents of an alleged filicide in Khongjom, the suspicious death of Matouleibi in Malom and the alleged suicide of Lata in Thongjao.
She continued that WAC visited the families and also investigated the incidents in detail.
In the Khongjom filicide case, as husband of the alleged culprit was posted in Kabul there was no room for covering up extra-marital affairs, if any.
Moreover, as the woman, who stabbed to death her own daughter, had no mental issue in the past and is currently pregnant, the only reason for such a merciless assault could be due to superstition, the secretary surmised.
With regard to Matoulei-bi's case, Robita expressed strong suspicion that the victim woman could have been subjected to brutal physical abuse even on the day of her death.
In Lata's case, her late husband's cousin, who is currently in custody in connection with the case, should be punished accordingly.
All those involved in these cases should be punished as per the law of the land, she said.
Robita then urged all women to be careful and not tolerate any form of abuse, stating that if they do face abuse, she should return to her parental family or approach WAC.
"A dead person cannot plead or defend themselves," she remarked, while urging all to help prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
