Imphal, August 04 2025:
With an aim to raise awareness about the importance of bone and joint health, Hand Hospital observed the National Bone and Joint Day at its Langthabal Kunja auditorium on Monday.
The function was attended by Iland Hospital chairman Pheiroijam Landhoni, medical superintendent professor Dr Irom Ibomcha, JNIMS Joint Replacement Specialist orthopaedic surgeon Dr Heisnam Angamba, and JNIMS orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr Takhelmayum Umesh Singh as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ibomcha highlighted the rising incidence of bone injuries and joint-related ailments.
He noted that with the increasing number of high-speed vehicles, road accidents have become more frequent, leading to a surge in cases of bone fractures.
Additionally, the prevalence of bone and joint diseases is on the rise globally due to various factors.
However, he said advancements in medical science have made joint replacement surgeries highly successful, allowing patients to lead fulfilling lives.
He also drew attention to the higher susceptibility of women to osteoporosis.
While treatment options were limited in the past, Dr Ibomcha pointed out that ongoing research has led to the availability of effective therapies, making it possible to both treat and prevent osteoporosis and maintain bone health.
He further informed that Hand Hospital is working towards becoming a specialised orthopaedic centre by collaborating with reputed hospitals outside the state.
"This initiative aims to provide affordable and accessible bone disease treatments for patients in Manipur who cannot afford to travel for advanced care," Dr Ibomcha said.
Highlighting the hospital's achievements, he shared that two patients diagnosed with bone tumours, who were initially advised for leg amputation, were successfully treated at the hospital without the need for amputation, as the tumour cells were completely removed.
